CEN Projects

The Community Environment Network (CEN) was formed in 1997 as an over arching body to support individuals and groups on the Central Coast and in Lake Macquarie who are working for the environment.

Membership of the CEN is open to both individuals and other groups across the region who support our aims and objectives. CEN is a community-based, not-for-profit organisation governed by a volunteer committee which meets monthly (except December).

The CEN employs a number of part time staff but most of our activities are carried out by volunteers.

We are an independent community group that works for Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) and against threats to it.

Aim and Objectives

  • Increase the effectiveness of community groups in the region
  • Be a regional voice for the environment and sustainability
  • Provide a forum for public discussion and education
  • Increase public awareness and understanding
  • Promote community monitoring of the environment
  • Facilitate the empowerment of individuals

CEN is located on the Ourimbah Campus of the University of Newcastle. Previously located in The Manor, one of the campus's original farm houses, we can now be found in the Facilities Management Building on Loop Road. This new location has given CEN an expanded space for our popular Wildplant Nursery.

We have retained many of the sustainable features in our new building including:

  • Recycled building - courtesy of Newcastle University
  • Energy Audit and Low Energy, CFC Free Fridge - sponsored by Energy Australia
  • Water tanks for gardens and rinsing Waterwatch Equipment - sponsored by Australian Government Water Grant;
  • Computer screens having low energy requirements - paid for by CEN.
  • Security Bike Rack to encourage use of bicycles - Sponsored by Federal Government
