The future of Fairview Homestead at Mangrove Creek suddenly looks brighter after Gosford City Council approved a Mayoral minute at its meeting on Tuesday night 24 July.  Mayor Laurie Maher tabled the minute which, after discussion between councillors and some amendment to enhance the intent of the motion, the councillors voted unanimously to adopt as follows:

A An agreement, in principle, be given to the Friends of Fairview for a three year period from 1 August 2012 to secure the funding of approximately $500,000 for the restoration of the Fairview Homestead.

B If the required funds are not secured within this period, then the resolution of Council (2011/629) remain.

C Council give assistance through its Grants Officer for the lodgement of respective grant applications for the project.

This decision gives the Friends of Fairview the capacity to seek funding from a number of sources with sufficient time available to maximise the prospects for success. If successful, the homestead, which has been recommended several times for heritage listing, will be able to be restored and used for useful community activities such as school history excursions and historic tours.

Committee Chairman Warren Andrews welcomed the decision and expressed his appreciation of the Mayor's initiative and the unanimous support of all councillors. He said this demonstrates the beauty of democracy in action and gives confidence to the community in the possibility of successfully pursuing worthwhile projects.

Mr. Andrews said that work would quickly be commenced on seeking the necessary funding through Federal and State Government grants, corporate sponsorships, donations and public fundraising. He also flagged the possibility of a national appeal facilitated by the National Trust.
