About the Pittwater Site Pittwater is a sheltered waterway which has the largest concentration of boat owners and users in NSW. Development surrounds the water on the eastern and southern shores, but approximately 60% of the western shoreline is located within Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park. Pittwater, at 5.5km long and generally quite deep, enters Broken Bay from the south. Careal Bay and Pittwater itself are major tributaries to Broken Bay. Palm Beach is a popular recreational area. The water is a fish, prawn and crustacean producer, with commercial activities increasing of late with the closure of Sydney Harbour. Boating activities and heavy development over the last decade have made a substantial impact on the waterway. Seagrass species found here include Zostera, Halophila and Posidonia. The invasive seaweed, Caulerpa taxifolia, has been identified within this waterway.
