About the Lake Macquarie - Coal Point Site With a massive catchment area of 700km2 and the third largest estuarine area in NSW (120km2), Lake Macquarie is a significant estuary. Lake Macquarie is a popular tourist area. It supports amateur fishing, boating, and water- skiing. It is the second largest estuarine fish producer in NSW (430 t/yr), and a significant source of crustaceans and molluscs. It is estimated that there is 1% tidal exchange during an average tidal cycle, which has important water quality management issues. Lake Macquarie has the third largest estuarine seagrass area (13 km2), with species of Zostera, Halophila, Posidonia and Ruppia growing here. Caulerpa taxifolia has been identified as a noxious weed found within this waterway, and this is the Northern-most waterway that Caulerpa taxifolia has been found.
