Great Lakes - Green Point

Green Point is located on Wallis Lakes, close to Forster, in The Great Lakes Council area. Wallis Lakes is a complex estuary of lakes, rivers and creeks.  The Lake is permanently opened to the ocean with twin break walls separating the towns of Forster and Tuncurry.

Wallis Lakes is a popular recreational fishing area, and is also important commercially with 360 tonnes caught here per year. It is the largest crustacean producer in NSW at 140 t/yr (or 20% of the NSW estuarine total) and it also produces a lot of oysters (45 tonnes per square kilometre per year).

Wallis Lakes is able to sustain its large aquaculture production in part to its extensive coverage of seagrass. Wallis has the largest estuarine seagrass coverage in NSW (31 km2) as well as extensive saltmarsh areas (4 km2).

Boating activities have an effect on the health of seagrass and water quality. Urban development and canal developments on the lake also affect the quality of water entering the lakes.

Wallis Lakes is the Northern-most estuary where Posidonia is found. Seagrass species occurring in Wallis include Zostera, Halophila, Posidonia and Ruppia.
