About the Bellingen - Urunga Site

Urunga is located on the mouth of the Bellingen River, and is a popular tourist area. The population often doubles during peak seasons. The River is a popular recreational and commercial fishing area, including substantial commercial crustacean fishing in the estuary. The river is generally negotiable by small boats, which may have impacts on the local seagrass beds and other vegetation in the area.

The New England and Dorrigo National Parks cover 25% of the 1110km2 catchment (NSW Department of Natural Resources, 2006). The predominant species of seagrass is Zostera, which adjoins areas of mangroves and salt marsh. Agriculture along the river has a significant affect on the Bellingen River's water quality.
