Lake Macquarie species snapshot: Eastern blue-tongued lizard

The eastern blue-tongued lizard (Tiliqua scincoides) lives in forests, open woodlands and grasslands of northern and eastern Australia.  It is a resident of the Lake Macquarie area, shelters in hollow logs, rocky crevices and leaf litter.

The Eastern Blue Tongue lizard is a large, handsome silvery-grey or brown lizard with dark brown bands across its back and tail and a black stripe between its eyes and shoulders. It is a non-venomous lizard which will hiss and/or stick out its blue tongue to deter any enemies.

Blue-tongued Lizards eat snails, slugs, and insects as well as wildflowers, native fruit and berries. They are therefore invaluable in the garden as a natural pest control.
