Brief Aims of Group: Maddens Creek, Erina and Fires Creeks, in the Matcham-Holgate Valley were the subject of an assessment lastyear by the Catchment Management Authority.Landholders with creek frontage were contacted and invited to assist CMA personnel in formulating a report. There was considerable interest amongst neighbouring properties; the importance of water quality was recognised, and a willingness to restore degraded stretches of creek, thus re-introducing animals such as platypus, eels, freshwater fish etc. became a common goal. The report was completed and the Management Plan was handed over to the Matcham –Holgate Landcare Group in November last year. Each landholder involved received a copy of the Management Plan.

Maddens Creek arises at the end of Oak Road and from an initial meeting in Oak Road, many neighbours meeting for the first time decided to amalgamate. As there was already a group in Wattle Tree Road (Friends of Fires Creek) ”Mates of Maddens Creek” was chosen as a title, and the Eastern Snake-head Tortoise as it’s logo. At present there are between 20 and 30 members; not all members are “creek-siders’ because primarily it is a neighbourhood group of diverse ages and abilities who enjoy each others company. Gosford City Council has supported the Mates from its beginnings and we are enthusiastic about our increasing membership.

Activities: Activities in the future comprise workshops (weed / plant identification), potting-up sessions, help with grant applications - all of which will conclude with a happy hour/ BBQ.
